In Tokyo, Kumi is an aspiring singer who is contemplating either losing her virginity or committing suicide on her birthday. Alone and determined to have one last day of happiness, she crosses paths with a depressed office worker at Shinjuku Station, the busiest in the world. The story unfolds as a dark Cinderella tale, playing out as a journey until the stroke of midnight, or mayonaka.
The actors who participated in this film are all dedicated professionals. They rose to the challenge of working with a foreign filmmaker despite cultural and linguistic barriers. Each brought their unique qualities to their roles. The film was shot entirely at night in real locations around Shinjuku. This required the actors to be well-prepared while appearing spontaneous to adapt to the real-world environment.
